Area Summer Games For Seniors Underway
Summer Games for seniors in Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott, Russell and Akwesasne are on. The games are open to all those aged 55 and up in the area, known as District 8 of the Ontario Senior Games. This year, gold medal winners will qualify for the provincial summer games to be held in Oshawa, in August.
The local games kicked off with a five pin bowling competition recently at Nativity Lanes in Cornwall. A Winchester teamtook the gold medal, a team from Embrun won silver and a Cornwall area team took home bronze. Robert Peladeau of Williamstown and Claudette Shepard of Cornwall won the men's and women's singles events.
A new event this year is pickle ball. This mini-tennis game is played by two or four people on a badminton-sized court using wood paddle racquets and a plastic, poly baseball with holes. The event will be a doubles competition, with men's, women's and mixed sections. It is scheduled for June 7 at Ecole Jean 23 in Cornwall.
Next up in the list of activities is the swimming competition, in sprint, prediction and medley, scheduled for May 4 and 6 at Nav Canada in Cornwall. To register or for more information, contact the conveners, Janet Draycott (613-936-9243) and Harry Jarrett (613-933-4526).
